HOW Journal is an annual publication led by ASOCOPI, the Colombian
Association of Teachers of English. HOW is registered with Infotrac
GALE Cengage Learning - Informe Académico and indexed in
Publindex-Colciencias, classified in category C
Our journal is mainly interested in maintaining communication among
English teachers in Colombia and abroad by offering possibilities to
disseminate knowledge concerning English language teaching issues.
In the past years, this objective has been fully achieved thanks to the
contributions of committed professionals with different backgrounds
and from various parts of the world but who have in common an interest
in sharing their findings and experiences in the area of ELT. This is why
ASOCOPI kindly wants to invite you to be part of this academic group of
people by sending your contribution for the 2012 issue.
The ASOCOPI Newsletter is a periodical publication whose main
objectives are to inform, educate, entertain, give opinions, motivate,
foster members all around the country and, increasingly, from abroad.
The last numbers have featured a series of academic articles from
committed teachers who wanted to share their professional experience
with the readership of the Newsletter. Send your contributions to our
e-mail.
Ron Thomson, an associate professor of Applied Linguistics at Brock
University (Canada) is seeking collaborators (preferably in Bogota, but
other cities are possible) to conduct a study investigating the impact of
phonological training on short term phonological memory and English
pronunciation, between September and December of 2012.
Previous research indicates that a strong relationship exists between a
learner’s phonological working memory and his/her second language
oral fluency, listening comprehension, and vocabulary acquisition. The
aim of the research study is to test learners’ phonological working
memory both before and after English pronunciation training. Training
will be implemented using www.englishaccentcoach.com. In addition,
psycholinguistic experiments measuring oral fluency, listening
comprehension and vocabulary learning will be conducted before and
after the training period. The pre and post tests will require access to a
computer lab for approximately 1 hour. The training itself can be done
either in a computer lab, as part of a language training program, or at
home, as part of assigned practice for students/volunteers. The training
phase will last one month, and require approximately 20 training
sessions of 15-20 minutes each, either at school or at home. Previous
research has shown that at a minimum, volunteer learners will benefit
from significantly improved perception of English vowels and
consonants, and significant improvements in pronunciation.
A minimum of 20 learners are needed to volunteer for this study.
Volunteers will receive an honorarium for participating (the exact sum
will depend on the length of participation). Any English language
instructors or researchers who are interested in participating can
contact the principle investigator at rthomson@brocku.ca
