  Language ideologies: some reflections for English language teachers  

Ideologies are significant symbolic phenomena that, within particular socio-historical contexts, serve to create and maintain relations of subordination between different groups (Thompson, 1984). In language studies, the investigation of language ideologies has become an expanding field of inquiry (Rohling, 2024). Language ideologies are understood as the beliefs that speakers hold about aspects such as the use, norms, forms, functions, quality, and value of languages (Silverstein, 1979; Woolard, 1998). English language ideologies (ELI), more specifically, concern ideas that either support or question the contemporary global expansion of English (Pan, 2015). Identifying and characterizing ELIs allows us to better understand the complex processes behind the worldwide diffusion of English and to avoid naturalizing hegemonic and homogenizing practices that our teaching may inadvertently reproduce.
