Labor based Contract Grading
This workshop will begin with an overview of recent scholarship that focuses on the implementation of more socially just assessment practices. Namely labor based contract grading, an alternative form of assessment is often used in writing classes. As the name implies, labor-based grading focuses on the time and effort a student invests in an assignment rather than the outcome. This method of grading is often (but not always) communicated to students in the form of grading contracts. Attendees will have the opportunity to develop a grading contract for their own classes and the workshop will conclude with a question-and-answer session.

Language teaching and assessment with Indigenous language communities
This workshop explores opportunities for language teachers to engage in teaching and assessment that includes Indigenous languages. The workshop coordinators uses examples from (1) Asociación Mexicana de Evaluación de Lenguas Indígenas (AMELI) to review language teaching and assessment originating from Indigenous communities; and (2) English language teachers incorporating local Indigenous languages within their classroom pedagogical practices as a starting point for exploration. While developing possible applications for participants’ contexts, the workshop will provide opportunities for participants to discuss the benefits and some tensions or controversies that come up when engaging in language teaching and assessment with Indigenous language communities.

Know what they know: assessing skills in the communicative language classroom
A teachers’ mission is to help our learners reach their learning goals and achieve their full potential, and to do that we need a clear picture of what they can and cannot do in English. How can we know what our students know? In this session, we will explore the assessment of language and its role in the communicative teaching toolkit. Join us to learn more about the principles of effective formative and summative assessment, the definition and application of communicative competence, the Common European Framework of Reference, practical tools to plan our assessment strategies, and approaches to assess different skills in the classroom.

LAALTA
LAALTA Workshop on Item Analysis: Several Basic Measures that Help You Interpret How Well Your Multiple Choice Test Items Work
In this workshop, participants will learn basic theoretical concepts related to the item analysis of multiple-choice test data. The workshop will begin discussing different assessment contexts and argument-based validity. Participants will learn how to calculate measures of descriptive statistics (M, SD, SE), difficulty, and discrimination, and how to interpret real test data, identifying whether multiple-choice test items are “are too easy/hard”; “are just right”. Real assessment questions and answers will be examined, connecting quantitative theory with real-world experience. Participants should have a working knowledge of Excel (writing basic equations in Excel) and should bring their own laptops.

Assessment Literacy and the Design of Assessment Ecosystems
Assessment Literacy is an essential aspect for language learning educators, students, and education stakeholders alike. Without a robust understanding of Assessment practices, Curriculum Development and Evaluation efforts remain incomplete, hindering the effectiveness of educational systems. Establishing a comprehensive assessment framework goes beyond mere administration of tests; it necessitates a deep dive into assessment literacy and the creation of ecosystems that enhance teaching and learning processes. This workshop, presented in the format of a Pearson Design Thinking Session, offers participants the opportunity to not only enhance their understanding of diverse assessment methodologies but also to actively engage in the design of actionable plans to elevate the quality of assessment processes within their educational institutions as well as designing adequate assessment ecosystems. Through critical thinking, creativity, and educational innovation, attendees will gain practical insights into fostering the assessment of competence-based instruction and fostering a culture of continuous improvement. Join us for a transformative session aimed at empowering educators to shape more effective assessment practices and promote meaningful learning outcomes

Being Flexible with Amazing Techniques in an International Test
In this conference it is discussed how to establish a methodological assessment for live language practice sessions, starting from the perspective of the language level measurement in which the knowledge acquired by the learners is being continuously evaluated and measured in social and working areas. Considering this, is essential to provide the student with the necessary tools and understanding of why learning a language is an opportunity of professional growth and not just an empty requirement in which the main goal is to memorize structures with no purpose.

Tailor Your Program to Meet Your Students Needs
How do we get our students to meet their full language potential?Public and private educational organizations have used a cookie-cutter approach to academic instruction for years. One size fits all but second and foreign language programs should be seen using different lenses to get the right optic and create ideal results in their context. Each program and each student deserves an individualized game plan to meet their specific needs and explore their unique potential to grow linguistically and academically. In this learn-by-doing session, participants will explore how data informs instructional practice to empower student language growth, provide program checkpoints for language pathways, and drive program improvement.
